About Trey Yates

Trey was the proud founder of Greenbrier Dairy and Creamery, a business he launched in his early twenties after studying Agricultural Economics at West Virginia University. From the start, his approach to farming was grounded in purpose: to build something meaningful, to create good jobs—especially for those in recovery. Trey was an astute businessman—but never too busy to give back to West Virginia’s food and agriculture community. In 2024, he joined the staff of the West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition with a clear and humble goal: he had learned enough about running a business and working in food manufacturing that he wanted to share that knowledge with others who were struggling. And that’s exactly what he did—supporting dozens of farmers and food entrepreneurs. He was also instrumental in launching Appalachian Cellar, a line of West Virginia-made value-added food products.

To know Trey was to feel his quiet passion and unwavering beliefs—rooted deeply in his years in 4-H and the values instilled in him through his upbringing. Trey thought the world of his parents and often spoke of how much he learned from them. His commitment to growing West Virginia’s food system—one small business, one local ingredient, one person at a time—was unshakable. He believed in people. He believed in place. And he believed in what’s possible when you put your heart into the work.

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Trey’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident. He was just 28 years old, but in that time, he accomplished more than most do in a lifetime—and left an imprint on countless lives along the way. As we mourn this profound loss, we also invite you to join us in continuing Trey’s work—by supporting the legacy he began, and the future he dreamed of building.
